Thanks for the info on these bags and ways to stay safe….my personal comments/tips: 1) I never, ever, carry a bag out when I will be in crowded public areas—I put my id, day cash, lip crème/mirror in an inside pocket of blouse/jacket or secure pants pocket. Sling a water bottle & umbrella if necessary…and go. You find out quickly what is vital……only carry those items in all possible situations. If I feel safer or absolutely have to carry a bag out–I make sure first that it is as small as possible and a cross-body style….that I can wear UNDER a light blouse, jacket, coat re weather conditions. These tactics keep me safer and prevent me from losing stuff….which I am prone to do if I carry too much!! There’s a sad story about Rx sunglasses and a sheep in Ireland!!

Along with the YETI Panga, SealLine’s WideMouth Duffel is the only other waterproof duffel on this list. These two bags are quite different, however: the SealLine is made with vinyl instead of the YETI's thick nylon, resulting in a significantly lower weight and profile. Further, the roll-top design means that it can't be fully submerged but it does pack down nicely to accommodate any size load. And perhaps most importantly, the WideMouth is less than one-third the price of the Panga.
Hands down, the easiest duffels to pack, unpack, and rummage around in are those with a large, U-shaped opening. Duffels such as the Patagonia Black Hole feature this design: a zippered flap extends around three of the four sides of the top of the duffel and opens to reveal most of the contents. These bags provide easy access whether in a hotel, tent, or on the road. Other bags, such as the Filson Field Duffel, open in a more traditional style, with one zipper that extends across the top of the bag. With a smaller opening, access to the contents is more limited, and especially when full (this means more rummaging and disorganization). If you’re looking to prioritize convenience above all else, large roller duffels like the Osprey Shuttle offer the most rigid structure and largest opening for packing and unpacking.
"My go-to carry-on is a black leather backpack because it's easy to carry around (two free hands for pre-boarding book and magazine browsing!), sturdy enough to hold some of my heavier items, and sleek enough that I feel OK bringing it along if I'm meeting friends for drinks straight from the airport. Mine has been everywhere from rooftop bars to the middle of the Rocky Mountains (though it's admittedly not the ideal piece of gear for more advanced hikes). Added bonus: If you didn't pack a purse, it can be used as one throughout your trip." — Nina Ruggiero, Senior Digital Editor
Overwhelmingly positive user reviews -- and the shockingly affordable price point -- mean Delsey is one of the most sought-after names in portage. Why? The quality, of course. Made with durable, lightweight polycarbonate in a sexy deep metallic finish, the double 360-degree wheels assure exceptional maneuverability. Two fully-lined compartments with multiple pockets provide organization for garments and personal items, and web straps and a zippered divider help minimize wrinkles. Expands up to 2 inches, but weighs nearly 13 pounds.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear is in a class of its own, but for serious outdoorspeople, their duffel is a very intriguing option. We’ll start by noting that this bag is not flashy or made for rolling through the airport on your next trip. The big selling point is the Dyneema fabric, which is used on ultralight tents and backpacks and known for its extremely impressive strength-to-weight ratio. If you’re looking for a lightweight, tough, weather resistant, and large capacity duffel that will fit on a pack horse or in a sled on your next backcountry foray, the HMG Dyneema Duffel is a great way to go.

Backcountry didn’t necessarily do anything new with the Trekker, but they did make a quality bag at a reasonable price point. Compared to our top-ranked Black Hole, the Trekker lags behind in durability (it has 300-denier fabric vs. the Patagonia’s 900 denier), weather resistance (the Backcountry lacks the waterproof laminate coating of the Black Hole), and capacity options. Further, the Trekker only is available in two colors and sports a very large logo on one end, which not everyone will appreciate. For $9 more, we’ll stick with the tried-and-true Black Hole, but the Trekker is another viable option in this category.
If you know coolers, chances are you know the YETI brand. And it’s no surprise that the company entered the duffel market with a splash. Many models on this list are water resistant—they can withstand wet ground and the occasional rain shower—but the Panga is fully waterproof. You’ll often spot this thick and submergible duffel on rafts, fishing boats, and pretty much anywhere people want the ultimate level of protection for their gear. Made with laminated high-density nylon that feels like rubber, a burly EVA bottom, and a waterproof zipper that locks firmly into place, this duffel is as water-ready and air-tight as you’ll find.
We can’t sing the praises of this bag enough. It’s spare but polished, made of lightweight, stain-resistant nylon, and hits the sweet spot of form and function. The interior offers plenty of pockets for keeping your stuff organized, and it’s got wheels and a retractable handle hidden in a zip pocket, so you can roll it through the terminal if you overpack.
If you’re a jetsetter, then you need pieces of luggage that meet airline regulations for carry-on baggage for an easy experience traveling. Our carry-on spinner has a hard-case design to keep all of your items protected. The retractable handle and spinning wheels make it easy for you to navigate through the airport terminals without feeling weighed down and without your arms tiring. The compact size and zippered interior compartments make it an excellent travel companion; you can keep everything organized so you don’t have to rummage through all of your belongings to find what you need. You can make it your own with the addition of a monogram, which is available for free as an oversized vinyl decal that really brightens up the design.
I am very impressed with this bag, thus far. I have only had it about a week, so we will see how it holds up to the weight of textbooks over time. It has excellent padding on the handle, straps, and on the back of the bag. I was concerned that it would not expand to fit my books and folders, but it has not disappointed! Once I stuffed all of my gear into it, it expanded to about 8” wide. The front compartment has odds & ends in it. The middle compartment has two 3 ring binders and a LARGE textbook in it. The back compartment has my iPad, several notebooks, and a wad of pens in it. Pics of all 3 compartments included. This bag holds A LOT! I haven’t even used the smaller outer compartments, and I fit a lot more in it than I thought I ... full review

how to use space saver travel bags

My favorite tip is to be organized and prepared but still willing to be spontaneous. When going new places, my husband and I research the top places to go, get recommendations, and decide what general areas we want to go to. We make sure to hit the top things on our list and then just wander to see what else we can find. When we went to Tokyo, we found the best ramen place and a beautiful little park just by wandering around.
Size Duffels come in all sizes, from an overnight carry-on to bags that can hold a week’s worth of gear. Envision your likely load, and think about sizing up a bit to give you some additional space. If you want an easy-to-carry bag to bring souvenirs home from a trip, look for ones that collapse into themselves so you can stash it in your other luggage and pull it out for the trip home.

My travel advice is to carry 5,10 or 20 dollar cash in and out pocket in case you are robbed at gun point as I was. I only had a straw wrapper and the robber looked nervous so I was afraid to remove my outer layers to give him my security pouch. My travel partner was being held up by his accomplice who did not have a gun so she handed him her pouch and they grabbed it knocking her down on the curb in the process. If I had cash n that outer pocket I could have handed over and they may have run off with that .
5. Wear your bag in a way that dissuades theft. Most often thieves look for an easy mark. A handbag across your chest (as opposed to hanging loosely over a shoulder) will look more challenging and less appetizing.  Keep your bag on the inside rather than on the street side. Yes, there have been instances of women being dragged along by a thief on a scooter BUT seeing a well-protected bag should be pretty dissuasive. If this worries you, use a pashmina or a scarf over your shoulder. It won't hide your bag completely but it makes it more complicated for thieves - and they like to keep things simple.
"When it comes to camera bags, Billingham is a tried-and-true brand that I trust with my camera equipment. The bag is structured with a removable padded insert, has exterior pockets, and can hold a DSLR, and extra lens, and accessories. The weather-resistant material and front flap protect my equipment from inclement weather, allowing for an uninterrupted day of outdoor travel." — Mary Robnett, Assistant Photo Editor

The Base Camp Duffel from The North Face is a fully-featured bag and a direct competitor to the Patagonia Black Hole above. It’s similarly tough and water resistant, offers easy access to the inside, and can be carried as a backpack, which we love. Both bags offer comparable organization pockets, but the Base Camp’s medium and large models add an exterior compartment on one end that allows you to separate dirty clothes and shoes. The Base Camp comes in more colors and designs than we can count, and is available in capacities ranging from 31 liters (XS) to a whopping 150 liters (XXL). For everything from a carry-on to an expedition workhorse, this is one of the most popular duffels on the market year after year.

Thank you for sharing a variety of bag options. I usually carry a Sherpani bag because it is what I have at home. My travel tip is to carry a small pouch of essential oils including peppermint and lavender. Peppermint comes in handy with car sickness and/or yucky fumes/smells on the plane and lavender is helpful for soothing sunburns or other skin stuff.
"My Calpak spinner totally converted me from a duffel-toting, backpack-wearing traveler to a serious fan of the hard-shell suitcase. And with the Wandr carry-on, Calpak solved my only qualm: there's an easy-access front pocket for my laptop and necessities. I see no reason to ever swap out my suitcase again." — Melanie Lieberman, Associate Digital Editor
Roller duffels do have their limitations. First, rarely do roller duffels come with anything more than carry handles, making them difficult to transport in areas without sufficient rolling surfaces (they lack backpack straps, which we love). Second, cheaper or ultralight duffels have a tendency to fall over when full, which is something to be aware of when making a purchase (heavier models like the Osprey Shuttle do not fall over, which makes them worth the extra cost in our opinion). Finally, roller duffels inherently have more breakable parts. Some duffels have replaceable wheels but many don’t, which is a quick way to lose all of that easy transport functionality.
Fjällräven’s Duffel No.6 looks a lot like the standard-issue bag you might find hanging on the wall at a military surplus store. It’s not. The Swedish outdoor brand started with its proprietary G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco fabric, a canvas-like blend of recycled polyester and organic cotton that’s incredibly tough, windproof and water-resistant (especially after treatment with Greenland Wax). Then the bottom was reinforced with padded waterproof, PU-coated, polyamide fabric, and double handles were added at the ends along with stowaway backpack straps on top. There’s also a nice padded top panel, to cushion your back from the bag’s contents when you’re carrying it backpack-style.
I do not carry an anti-theft bag yet, but I will be looking into it as the only times I’ve had things stolen while travelling are from a backpack! My travel tip is…also to do with bags..but I always chuck in a couple of roll-up nylon shopping bags when I am packing. They are great as dirty washing bags, shoe bags, beach and pool bags or to put your shopping in as a way to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. My ones hold up to 20kg so they can carry a lot of groceries! And when you have bought too many souvenirs you can also use them as an extra carry-on bag (and I’ve never been charged for it). My favourites are envirosax (Australian) and Loqi. They all have beautiful eye-catching designs too.
