The size is perfect for I'd say a two-to four-day trip, and it's absolutely the ideal carry-on. I just recently checked at the airport. It fits headlong or sideways into any larger plane's overhead bin — a major advantage — and will never rouse the contempt of flight attendants or gate checkers looking to cut down on carry on by forcing you to check your bag. At the same time, I was able to pack it for a week-long international trip recently (which is pushing it somewhat) but worth it all to skip the airport carrousels and keep all my important things close by.
Thanks for a great article and reviews. I travel a lot to Africa and tend to keep it simple, never leave valuables lying around in plain sight, always carry bags across body, and keep it small. I have however been burgled at night while asleep and lost many digital devices (family trip) which were scattered around the house we were sleeping in. Since then I sleep with my cell phone under the mattrass and travel hand bag with passports and wallet tucked under the bed!
A favorite among in-the-know travelers, this sturdy canvas bag works as a weekender or a carry-on bag. The ingenious exterior pocket unzips into a sleeve so you can slip the bag over the handle of a rolling suitcase for a far less clumsy sprint to your gate. A separate bottom compartment means you can also keep a pair of slippers for your long-haul flight separate from the other myriad things you throw in your bag.
I have an upcoming weekend business trip where I go straight to a conference upon landing. Normally, I just travel with a backpack as my travel bag on such short trips. However, I want to up my travel luggage game, so I thought a nice leather duffel bag could be just what I was looking for. A travel duffel bag is still small enough to use as my carry on luggage, but big enough to hold enough clothes for a weekend easily. Plus, a nice leather duffel bag would cast a professional look.
I do not carry an anti-theft bag yet, but I will be looking into it as the only times I’ve had things stolen while travelling are from a backpack! My travel tip is…also to do with bags..but I always chuck in a couple of roll-up nylon shopping bags when I am packing. They are great as dirty washing bags, shoe bags, beach and pool bags or to put your shopping in as a way to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. My ones hold up to 20kg so they can carry a lot of groceries! And when you have bought too many souvenirs you can also use them as an extra carry-on bag (and I’ve never been charged for it). My favourites are envirosax (Australian) and Loqi. They all have beautiful eye-catching designs too.
Don’t be fooled by the affordable price tag: Herschel’s bags can stand up to years of wear and tear. This one is roomy enough for a weekend getaway, but not too huge to be impractical for everyday use — stash your work essentials plus a spare set of exercise clothes in the separate bottom compartment so you can take an impromptu spin class without lugging a gym bag around.
If you’re a jetsetter, then you need pieces of luggage that meet airline regulations for carry-on baggage for an easy experience traveling. Our carry-on spinner has a hard-case design to keep all of your items protected. The retractable handle and spinning wheels make it easy for you to navigate through the airport terminals without feeling weighed down and without your arms tiring. The compact size and zippered interior compartments make it an excellent travel companion; you can keep everything organized so you don’t have to rummage through all of your belongings to find what you need. You can make it your own with the addition of a monogram, which is available for free as an oversized vinyl decal that really brightens up the design.
It’s worth noting that Marmot did decide to use thinner materials on the current Long Hauler. With a burly 1,000-denier fabric, the older version was prized for its toughness and durability. Unfortunately, Marmot downgraded this bag to 600-denier while adding a side pocket. 600D certainly isn’t bad, but it’s now thinner than competitors like the Patagonia Black Hole and The North Face Base Camp while the price remains similar. We still like the Marmot, but it just doesn’t stand out like it used to.
This is an awesome bag! The fabric is very nice, and looks to be water resistant. My all-time favorite feature for this bag is the long strap. It is made of a seat belt material (very sturdy!) Gold hardware is solid. The bag has 2 nice handles that are sewn to the bag. The stitching is nice and even and does not appear to be of low quality. This bag has a nice luggage strap feature. On the back is a thick band with a zippered pocket that slips over the handles of a rolling luggage bag. Perfect size for a personal bag for a flight! The short handles and the black detail material on the sides resemble saffiano leather. We know this bag is eco-friendly and does not use real leather (but it looks nice). The bottom has 4 gold feet and the inside of the bag is brown. ... full review

Durability. Frequent travel requires a bag that will withstand all sorts of wear and tear. It doesn’t have to be leather, but it does need to be made with strong material and sturdy fasteners. Beware of shoddily made purses that can fall apart after a single trip. The best handbags for travelling abroad should last and last and last – first, because they're well made but second, because the style is perennial and never becomes old.
Made in Italy, Senreve's bags are designed to be used, not tucked away in a dust bag. The pebbled leather exterior of this tote is scratch- and stain-resistant (and the microsuede interior won't stain either). You couldn't ask for more pockets inside, with two tech sleeves, and size slip pockets for smaller essentails. And a zip-top is always helpful to have when traveling.

Why is the Gregory Alpaca ranked so low on the list? First and foremost, it lacks a shoulder strap. This isn’t a deal breaker for us as backpack-style is the carrying method of choice for a bag of this size, but a shoulder strap is great for short hauls and moving the bag from place to place. Second, the Alpaca lacks outside pockets for small items, which is a simple feature that adds a good deal of convenience. It's a solid duffel, but when you throw in the fact that the Alpaca is roughly the same price as bags from other top brands, it’s not a standout.

The structured, rectangular shape, contrasting top handles, and gold hardware make this Nicole Miller bag a perfect choice if you want a classy look without the high price tag. Reviewers say it’s roomy enough for a four-day trip, and the detachable, padded shoulder strap makes it comfortable to carry. It comes in several color combinations, but we’re partial to black and nude.
If you know coolers, chances are you know the YETI brand. And it’s no surprise that the company entered the duffel market with a splash. Many models on this list are water resistant—they can withstand wet ground and the occasional rain shower—but the Panga is fully waterproof. You’ll often spot this thick and submergible duffel on rafts, fishing boats, and pretty much anywhere people want the ultimate level of protection for their gear. Made with laminated high-density nylon that feels like rubber, a burly EVA bottom, and a waterproof zipper that locks firmly into place, this duffel is as water-ready and air-tight as you’ll find.
Backpacks are a tourist’s best friend because you can carry all of the items you need for the day on your back as you wander around town and explore exciting new destinations and historical sites. Cushioned pockets protect your electronics so you can travel with your laptop or tablet and keep all those delicate electronics protected. Small pockets in the front hold your wallet, keys and other important items. Personalized backpacks feature your name or initials, making it easy to distinguish your bag from others’ things.

Got this for my husband for Father's day. The only bag he had for short trips and stuff was a Puma duffel bag and I thought this will be a good upgrade. He loves it. Waxed canvas is thick and has a nice feel to it, leather seems to be of good quality, the straps are comfortable, pockets are perfect, and it looks really nice and classy. This is a grown man's bag.
I would like to say that cross body bags are targets for thieves. The three times I was robbed while living in south america involved cross body bags. For one, they are easy to rip off your body with enough force. That’s how I got robbed once. Someone just ripped it right off of me. I’ve heard of this happening to someone else. Someone on a bike rode by this woman and just ripped it right off of her. They also are easy for thieves to get their hands into without you looking so one that zips is essential. Thats how I was robbed the other two times – having a bag that didn’t zip.

Wow! I've been looking for a great leather duffel bag to use for business trips for 1-2 nights and this leather travel duffel is perfect. It's larger and taller than I realized and it has everything I was looking for in a high-quality, leather bag: durable, quality leather; inside pockets/compartment; inside fabric liner; cushioned shoulder strap; outside pocket and leather handle clasp. I've searched for months and on plenty of websites, but the cost to have all of these features was typically over $700. This bag is a fine example of quality craftsmanship from India. You can tell from the thick, quality leather to the stitching and materials used, that they were trying to create a high, quality item for the owner. I'll be looking to see what other products that they have to offer because of the quality of the craftsmanship!

We were in touch with style blogger Karis Renee this week for another story, but decided to send along the question to see if she had any thoughts. Karis Renee did not disappoint. First, she let us know about these seat-belt bucket bags. I’d never seen anything like them before, but they’re supposed to be very durable, and I’m kind of into seat belts as a texture. Very travel.
It’s surprisingly hard to decide what bag to use while packing for a weekend getaway or a quick three-day trip. You may attempt — to no avail — to stuff everything into a backpack to curb your overpacking tendencies. Or maybe you find rolling suitcases embarrassing, so you end up cramming too many things into a duffel bag that was clearly not made to hold so much stuff. What you need is a weekender bag.
Why do we have the SealLine ranked here? The YETI has more structure and is much easier to pack, not to mention the fully waterproof zipper system mitigates the common user error of creating a roll-top seal (SealLine also makes the Zip Duffel, which has a waterproof main zipper). Moreover, the YETI has backpack straps and therefore is easier to carry. And the cherry on top: the extra thickness of the YETI means that it’s much more durable in the long term. But for those looking for a waterproof duffel without breaking the bank, the SealLine WideMouth is a nice option.
